Web Business Basics 102: List Building Strategies follow-up

Last weekend’s 4-part List Building webinar and Open House was a great experience for Kathleen and me. I enjoyed doing the trainings and those of you who attended were very responsive. Thanks very much.

As usual, I went over the time allotted for training so we did not have as much time for networking this month, but there were lots of good questions about the material and the comments we have received have been overwhelmingly positive.

One question came up that requires a follow-up comment. The question: What is the difference between a pop-up, a pop-under and an exit pop; which is more effective and where can you get scripts for the various types of pops.

The answer:

  • A pop-up is a small web page that comes up OVER the content of a regular web page as the main web page loads in the browser. These pop-ups are more effective at collecting visitor names and email addresses than a lead-capture form on the web page itself but many people do block them because they can be very annoying.
  • A pop-under is a lead capture web page, often a bit larger than a pop-in but smaller than the original web page, that opens BEHIND the requested web page at the same time the requested page loads in the browser. The benefit here is that these pages may be harder to block, becuase they come up behind the requested content they are less annoying, and after a person leaves your site they will see the lead capture page and, if the gods are kind, will request whatever is being offered on the page. The interesting thing here is that if the person is surfing for a while they may not recognize where the pop-under came from when they see it. This may be good or bad, depending on how compelling your free offer is in getting them to give you their contact info.
  • An exit pop-up does not open when the web page loads. It “senses” when a user is about to leave the page and THEN pops up with an invitation to sign up for something free in exchange for the visitor’s name and email address. These are the hardest pops of all to block (for the time being) and, since they appear while the visitor is still on your site, they may be more effective than the pop-under at collecting contact info.
  • Yet a fourth option in “pops” is the “peel away ad” in which an upper corner of the requested web page is animated. When the visitor mouses over the corner, the requested page “peels away” to reveal a compelling offer and a lead capture form. These are the newest in the “pop” arsenal and seem to be very effective.

All of the “pops” are triggered by a Javascript and you can find versions of them in lots of places for various prices from free to quite a few $$. In order for the pops to work you must create the “mini web page” that you want to open in the pop window. I’ll list some resources below.

OR, the REALLY easy way to do these little gems is to use your aweber autoresponder to generate your lead capture forms. That way you can put your text into the window along with your form code and click whether you want a pop-up, pop-under, exit pop or pop-over/hover. Simply copy the Javascript code that aweber generates and paste it into the page you want the pop to come up on.
